This week Jameson sent me a video of a coach giving a speech to a Little League Baseball team after they’d just lost a huge game.
The kids are sobbing, you can see how much the game meant to them, and the speech that followed was something you’ve got to see…
It’s a lesson for life on being a fighter, not quitting, and taking pride in the things that really matter.
Were they from Cumberland, RI? I had a friend from there once. Makes the clip all the more poignant.
This is such an important point. So important that it’s actually hard for me to break it down . I think pride is so very important. Pride and your own integrity. What you feel where there is no reward, what you do when no one is watching.
It can take so very, very long while you’re fighting, struggling. Some sign of reward would be nice. But you can’t give up. The continual fight is what leads to reward. It’s exhausting, but good to acknowledge. I still have so much to do! But if I died tomorrow, I’d be very happy with way I’ve spent my time.
Jameson, you find the best stuff!
He does! ;D I love that you’d be very happy! That’s always lovely to hear xx
So, maybe you’ll stop picking on Jameson so much?
Thanks for another great reminder of What’s Important in Life.

Tonight I watched We Bought a Zoo movie and was moved by the “sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage” message, made me cry and now this – I’m a mess .
That group hug, got me ~ “I love you guys,” he said. “I’m going to love you forever. You’ve given me the most precious moment of my athletic and coaching career, and I’ve been coaching a long time. I’m getting to be an old man, I need memories like this, I need kids like this. You’re all my boys. You’re the boys of summer.”
Great message Matt. (I’m going to get more tissue now).
Yeah….soooo…does anyone else feel that Matt is the older, wiser, taller and way more handsome version of Harry Potter? Anyone?
…okay
Teehee :{D
Those kids are already farther ahead then the team who won. It makes me think of my nephew playing tball and at the end everyone wins and I feel that’s a huge disservice because that’s not reality.
Since you’re talking about effort and being a fighter is my position ready ;) oh and what did you do to your face it looks different?
Thanks for this, has come at a good time for me. Been feeling frustrated that I’ve been putting in the effort to meet that special someone but it’s still eluding me. I might not have gotten (yet) the ultimate result but I am getting results and certainly feel closer then I was (and some of it has definitely been fun ;) which you can forget when it doesn’t end up quite the way you hoped). I think of a story your dad told along the lines of, you shouldn’t give up your efforts, as sometimes you’re only 3 feet away from striking gold!
They should be very proud of themselves as they may not have won but it looks like they got to the final and gave it there all, which is a damn good achievement and probably exceeded everyone’s expectations. They can go home with their heads held high!
I love it when people take something from touching moments like these.
on the side- One of my favorite segments is the boring hero segment. Being able to recognize the beauty of the little things in our daily life is something I really admire. Just wanted to say to Matthew and Stephen(I guess Jameson has a part in it to) that you guys inspire me to become a person who is more straightforward and well-spoken. I find you both very articulate-the way you are able to express your thoughts with insight, humour and honesty is something I genuinely find remarkable and can ,in my opinion, not be praised enough.
keep it up!
This message’s timing comes perfectly as I just got another “you’re talented, but not experienced enough” kind of rejection by a band I was auditioning for. Sometimes to me it feels useless to try… Like why even bother? They’re all saying the same things. I guess I need to step back from time to time, look at the bigger picture and remember that “effort is the reward”. Thanks for the motivation!
Yes it is, you’ll get there Mila! :) xx
Matt, that was awesome!! Thanks again for all you do to teach and encourage so many!!!

Thanks Tammy! Happy to know you are enjoying xx
Hi, Matt…I really needed this video now…so first of all, thanks! “The effort is the reward” is so true! The reward isn’t a trophy that you receive during a brief moment at the very end of the day; the reward is what you are pulling out of yourself each time you play the game…the hero you are bringing to the task…the milestones you are making…the extension and forming of your character…the winner you are making and becoming…the self-respect, confidence and self-trust you gain when you know you are working & becoming…yes! I love this! xo
Thanks, Matt! This came at a perfect time for me. Was feeling quite discouraged about actually meeting someone special. It helped me realize the changes it has taken to get to the point where I am actively looking and the steps along the way has shown growth and progress. ( I also have to admit that I have been having some fun too. ;) ) In the past, this would be the point where the old me would be reluctant to continue to put any effort in. No results, what’s the point. But the person I am becoming is a fighter, and takes pride in finishing something. This was the kick in the butt I needed. Thanks again. I can’t wait for the retreat in October! :)
Kindest regards
Shev
So amazing to know Shev!! Keep on fighting! See you in October xx
Thank you so much for this video. It’s full of hope for warriors!
Yes it is! :) Glad you enjoyed! x
Hi Matt,
Love this video. I did see this speech when it came out and I did get a little misty eyed. Love how your material has been more than just about relationships, but about life. I’ve been following you for a little while now and you’ve always been so encouraging.
Surprised when I heard you say on Rachel Ray this week that you didn’t know how to cook. I must say I agree with Rachel Ray on this one because in my opinion there is nothing sexier than a man who knows how to cook :)
That’s great to hear Caitlyn, thank you! x
Thanks for this Matt!!!
Perfect timing as usual! Getting ready for a big adventure of my own that could easily be a disaster…. But the fact that I’m putting myself out there, out of my comfort zone, thats half the battle and most of the victory, right?
Ok, be good 8)….
Exactly. When you step out of your comfort zone and face something new, you can only grow and learn. Good luck Tiffany on your adventure! :) xx
Thank you so much for this video! I really need it!
I love this post! It’s hard not to get discouraged sometimes when I don’t get the results I want, but all the hard work really does pay off in the end because I’m a better person for it. I had a coach that often told us to run toward our goals. I try to remember that when I want to give up.
Thanks so much, Matt, for the encouragement. I always look forward to these posts.
P.S. Jameson needs a raise. LOL
Glad you love it! Never give up xx
P.S. I’ll see ;)
Hellow Matthew!
That was a really nice video! The greatest reward is certainly the satisfaction that follows every effort either it comes directly either in long term. Anyway it’s going to come and then no material goods will be able to replace it.
I hope that one day will meet you in person.
Warm greetings from Greece!
Thank you Benia! Glad you enjoyed xx
Lovethe video but slightly disagree. The effort is not the reward. Being a person who puts in the effort is. Its a blessing to see too for your hard work. But even I’d you don’t achieve what you wanted, you’re the kind of person that fought for it and didn’t give up. That makes one special no matter if they achieve or fail. You want that person on your team always. :)
Thanks. I agree. Hmmm on a different note Matthew, you look a bit pale. Were you I’ll recently? Take care of yourself. Cheers.
Thank Matt,
This is a very helpful video. I’m someone who is so competitive and winning is very important to me. I know I give myself hard time sometimes. Maybe I should give myself some credit at the end.
P.S. did you shave? you looked much sexier with facial hair, please bring it back.
Love ya all the way!
